Job Description:
HRU Technical Resources has partnered with a local utility / energy company to place an Electrical Engineer (Planning).  This role is responsible for electrical engineering activities related to the study, planning, design, operations and maintenance of electric transmission and distribution facilities. Most projects will involve some or all the following activities: investigations, studies, planning, reporting, estimating, economic evaluations, budgeting, scheduling, designing, drawing development and review, construction, training, commissioning and project management.

Essential Functions:
•    Conducts engineering studies, performs field investigations, and reviews operation and maintenance records and test data.
•    Makes recommendations for improvements to the Power Transmission & Distribution System (T&D)
•    Develops near term and long-term plans and planning documents for the T&D infrastructure based on engineering analysis and planning criteria.
•    Drafts reports and tracks metrics for the T&D system reliability and performance.  
•    Supports the NERC compliance program.
•    Proposes and creates technical designs for new and modified utility systems to support the integrity of our client’s utility infrastructure.
•    Follows our client’s construction and procedural standards.
•    Prepares specifications, scopes of work, and contracts.
•    Performs evaluation of bids and makes recommendations.
•    Supports T&D System Operations by creating, studying, and reviewing operations procedures and switching plans.
•    Acts as a technical resource for internal and external personnel relating the engineering, maintenance, support, and construction of T&D systems.
•    Manages outside consulting resources.
•    Keeps abreast of industry, laws, codes (i.e., NESC), standards (i.e. IEEE), and regulations.
•    Assists in the maintenance and development of T&D Standards.
•    Follows and enforces our client’s Safety Manual and wears personal protective equipment (PPE) as required.
•    Attends training for safety awareness and skills improvement as required by supervisor, BWL, or governmental agency.
•    Attends monthly safety meetings.
•    Performs other duties as directed.

Required Skills / Experience:
•    Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited university.
•    Two to five-plus years of responsible engineering experience.
•    Broad perspective of the utility business and knowledge of concepts and systems related to Electric T&D.
•    Thorough knowledge of fundamental engineering/economic principles and concepts.
•    Knowledge or familiarity of applicable policies, rules, regulations, and codes related to Electric T&D.
•    Knowledge or familiarity of principles, practices, and methods used in the construction of Electric T&D systems.
•    Skills and abilities in leadership, initiative, decision making, and clear and concise communication.
•    Proficiency to review, evaluate, and analyze technical information, policies, and reports.
•    Proficient knowledge of MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
•    Valid driver’s license with evidence of a safe driving record.
•    Ability to communicate and present to varying work groups including: Management, engineering departments, construction workers, and vendors/suppliers.

Preferred Skills / Experience:
•    Professional Engineering (PE) license.
•    NERC Certification.
•    Electric utility experience.
•    Demonstrated experience in technical writing.
•    Experience with electric system modeling software such as ASPEN, PowerWorld, PLS-CADD, and Synergi.
•    Grade commensurate with experience in design, construction, study, and planning of electric utility systems.
•    Must hold Michigan PE license to advance to grade 4 or higher (move up in the organization)

Physical Requirements:
•    Ability to retrieve data from computerized, typed and written sources.
•    Ability to effectively communicate in writing and orally while collaborating with internal teams or vendors.
•    Ability to work in a variety of environments including outdoors in all weather conditions, around energized electrical equipment, and in noisy or dirty environments with proper PPE.
•    Moderate stooping, crouching and kneeling.
•    Ability to lift to 30 lbs. of equipment, material and tools.
•    Able to transport oneself to off-site locations for meetings or construction observation on demand.
•    Occasional out of town travel required.
•    Occasionally required to enter confined spaces.

Workplace Environment:
•    Normal office environment.
•    Frequently exposed to adverse elements such as dust, noise, job site conditions, and inclement weather.
•    Exposure to high voltages
