3 years of experience and/or education equivalent preferred. Blueprint reading and knowledge of measuring equipment such as calipers, micrometers, and height gauges is helpful. Experience doing high-precision, large machining preferred but not necessary.

Position Summary

The machinist sets up and operates a variety of CNC machine tools to produce precision parts and instruments. Includes precision instrument makers who fabricate, modify, or repair mechanical instruments. May also fabricate and modify parts to make or repair machine tools or maintain industrial machines, applying knowledge of mechanics, mathematics, metal properties, layout, heavy rigging, and machining procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Comply with all company policies and procedures.
  • Complete all production paperwork and comply with ISO 9001:2008.
  • Produce highest level of quality utilizing control plan, drawings, and work instructions.
  • Updates job knowledge by participating in educational and training opportunities.
  • Keeps equipment and work area clean and orderly.
  • Reads and interprets blueprints to plan setup and operation of all types of machine shop machine tools.
  • Uses full range of precision measuring and gauging tools to perform inspection before start of job.
  • Performs repair, rebuilding or overhaul work of manufacturing or service equipment from blueprints, company manufacturing manuals, written or verbal instructions. Starts up and shuts down equipment in line with company safety procedures for equipment under power and OSHA requirements. Frequently works with other trade-persons such as millwrights, electricians, pipe-fitters, etc.
  • Makes repair parts if not commercially available not available from company central inventory stores.
  • Plans set-up and operates typical machine shop machine tools, producing parts to tolerances and company specifications. Uses typical machinist’s hand-tools.
  • Sets up and tests production equipment under power, testing for mechanical difficulties, tracing to their sources and correcting problem.
  • On second and third shifts and weekends may also act as stores attendant, providing machine parts and obtaining material requisition slip.
  • Cleans up sweepings of machine tool operation scrap and places in trash bin.

 

Minimum Qualifications

  • 5 years minimum experience.
  • Journeyman card a plus/completion of a formal apprenticeship program.
  • Siemens Controls a plus.
  • Capable of handling and machining parts up to 40 ton a must.
  • Print reading a must.
  • Flexibility to work 2nd or 3rd shift a big plus.
  • Leadership skills desired.
  • Effectively able to communicate with internal and external customers.
  • Proficient with computer data processing and reporting.
  • Able to read and comprehend simple to complex instructions, letter correspondence, maintenance and use of all related office equipment (computer, fax, copier and scanner) and its manuals. 
  • Able to complete forms neatly and accurately.
  • Able to add, subtract, divide and multiply all units of measure, including fractions, whole numbers, decimals and percentages.
  • Able to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed written or oral instructions.
  • Able to solve problems and deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations. 
  • Able to work without immediate supervision. 
  • Able to notice what work needs to be done and establish a time frame of how much time will be required to complete it.
  • Works with power driven equipment; overhaul and repair work may involve assignments in overhead structures or work beneath machinery.
  • Close attention and care is required to prevent damage to complex machine tools.
  • High mental and visual effort required.

  • Standing, walking, lifting, pulling and pushing, carrying, grasping, reaching, stooping and crouching, color determination, near acuity, speaking, listening

 

Work Environment

  • This work position is required to work in a manufacturing environment facility.
  • While performing duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to work near moving mechanical parts; toxic or caustic chemicals and risk of electrical shock.
  • The employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles; extreme heat (non-weather) and vibration. 
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
