MECHANICAL MAINTENANCE TECHNICIAN


POSITION SUMMARY

The Mechanical Maintenance Technician position is a core component of our Maintenance Department and requires a trained and experienced individual to contribute to our success as a steelmaker. The successful candidate will be a leader in safety and help in achieving Charter Steel’s goal of zero recordable accidents. The candidate will also have the ability to function well working alone and also in a team environment. This position will be responsible for maintaining the Melt Shop’s mechanical systems. 

The duties of this position will include but not be limited to performing preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, inspection, calibration, installation and all necessary support of the equipment in the Melt Shop.  These systems include hydraulic, pneumatic, lubrication, overhead traveling cranes, gearboxes, rolls and power transmission. The mechanical maintenance technician position is also expected to support and work as a team with the electrical maintenance technicians.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • 3 years of experience as a maintenance mechanical technician or equivalent.
  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Demonstrated commitment to safe working behaviors including lockout, fall protection, confined space and mobile equipment operation. 
  • Demonstrated work history of punctuality, consistent attendance and self-direction.
  • Ability to install, troubleshoot and maintain a wide variety of industrial equipment using prints and equipment manuals as guides.
  • Ability to operate mobile equipment such as forklifts, pendant and overhead traveling cranes and aerial lift platforms in a safe and professional manner.
  • Ability to work alone, with minimal supervision or with other maintenance technicians.
  • Ability to work in various areas of the mill that will include adverse environmental conditions such as dirt, grease, hot, cold and extreme heights.
  • A willingness to work overtime as required.
  • A Strong knowledge and experience with hydraulic and pneumatic systems, lubrication, power transmission including bearings, gearing, sprockets and couplings, conveyors, fans, shaft alignment, rigging, large equipment installation, welding, piping, HVAC and overhead crane maintenance. 
  • Experience and proficient use of maintenance equipment and tools including metal working, drill presses, saws and grinders. 
  • Proficiency in the use of a computer for receiving and closing out work orders, email communications and the basics of word processing and the use of spreadsheets. 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Associates degree in mechanical engineering technology or similar curriculum.
  • Experience in the steel industry specifically melting.
  • Strong communication skills and familiarity working in a team-based environment.
  • Ability to assist in managing mechanical projects for future growth and improvements.
  • A basic understanding of electrical devices
  • Skilled in welding, SMAW and MIG
  • The ability to fabrication parts and assemblies from prints

MAJOR ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Performing preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, inspection, calibration, installation and all necessary support of the equipment in the Melt Shop.
  • Support and work as a team with the electrical maintenance technicians
